Fiber cement siding is popular because of how low maintenance it is. However, it still needs occasional care, especially during the spring season. Today, Quality One Roofing Inc. shares some tips on cleaning your fiber cement siding this spring.
How to Clean Your Siding
One of the best ways to maintain your fiber cement siding is to clean it regularly. When cleaning the siding, remember to use proper materials and methods. Avoid using abrasive brushes or cloths and harmful chemicals, as they can cause permanent damage to the siding.
Depending on the type of substance that is “dirtying” your siding, there are different cleaning methods:
- Dirt, dust and chalk. Dampen your cloth and wipe over the siding. Make sure to rinse the cloth frequently to avoid any dirt particles from scratching the finish. After wiping, rinse the cleaned area. You can also use a paint brush to brush off the dirt and dust particles instead of cloth.
- Oil and grease. Add mild soap when dampening your cloth. Wipe the exterior surface of your home and rinse the siding properly. Be sure not to let the soap dry on the exterior. Like eliminating dirt and dust, rinse the cloth during the process to prevent scratching the exterior finish.
- Mold and mildew. Mold and mildew require more work to remove. To get rid of them, you will need a mildew cleanser. Make sure it doesn’t contain any damaging chemicals. Once you have selected your cleanser, follow the instructions on the package. Wash the moldy area and rinse the area thoroughly.
Other Maintenance Tips to Consider
Fiber cement siding is known for its low-maintenance features. However, your siding contractor may tell you to pay extra attention to the caulking and painting. Although fiber cement products are water-resistant, most installers use silicone caulk around adjoining portions of the home. Thus, expect windows, door frames and other exterior edges to have a layer of caulking. To prevent water from causing moisture damage to the exterior, make sure your siding is sealed tightly at all times.
