You have to make many decisions during roof replacement. In addition to choosing shingles, you’ll also have to decide what type of soffit and fascia to go with. Today, our roofing restoration experts share some guidance.
Found exclusively in roofing systems with overhanging sections, the soffit is the part of the roof’s underside that stretches from the edge of the roof to the home’s wall. The fascia is the horizontal surface of the roof that runs along the roof’s edges.
Just like with the roof’s top surface, the soffit and fascia can be made of different materials. Common options include wood and metal, but PVC and fiber cement boards are often used as well. Your roofing contractor will likely give you suggestions, but it still helps to do some research on the pros and cons of each material.
While soffit boards can come in standard sizes, you can’t expect your roof’s soffit to have the same dimensions. It’s important to ask your contractor about making sure your soffit boards are custom-fit for your roofing system. The same goes for the fascia, but installing it along the edge of the roof and cutting it to size is a bit easier.
Both the soffit and fascia are available in a wide variety of colors, either upon purchase or when painted over post-installation. You have to make sure that the soffit’s color does not clash with your home’s exterior walls, while the fascia must complement the color of your home’s gutter and shingles. Roof repair experts also strongly recommend considering features such as the presence of grilles or circular vents in the soffit for better roof ventilation.
