How Can Trees Cause Damage to Your Home?

Those tall trees around your home may add beauty to your property, but they can also cause damage. In today’s post, local roofing contractor Quality One Roofing Inc discusses the ways trees can damage your roof and what you can do to prevent this.

Damage Caused by Trees

One of the ways trees can damage your home is through the roots, which can extend under the house and result in uplift, causing the building to be slowly lifted as the roots grow. Roots may also cause moisture imbalance, resulting in the house settling as the soil loses elasticity.

Tree limbs can cause damage to most types of roofs. Sharp limbs may scratch the roofing surface and scrape the outer layer. On asphalt shingle roofs, this can expose the backing material to UV damage, while on metal roofs, this can expose the bare metal layer to corrosion. On commercial flat roofs, sharp objects can rip the outer single-ply layer, paving the way for roof leaks and requiring costly roof repair.

How to Prevent Damage Caused by Trees

You can install root barriers between the tree roots and the house foundations. Ideally, root barriers should be put in place while the trees are young. If you are installing root barriers for fully grown trees, an arborist or professional landscaper can help make sure that the root barriers will be placed in a way that won’t harm the tree roots. If root damage has already occurred, contact a house foundation repairs specialist.

When trimming tree limbs, the clearance should be about 10 feet. This provides enough allowance for growth so you don’t have to trim as often. It also helps prevent small animals from gaining access to your rooftop. Your local arborist can likewise help trim the tree limbs without harming the tree itself.
