A Beginner’s Guide to Roof Decking

Do you know what roof decking is? Although the decking is not visible from the curb, it is one of the biggest and most important components in the entire roof system. Today, our commercial roofing experts give you a rundown on this particular roofing component.

What Is the Roof Decking?

The roof decking is the part of the roof located just below the underlayment. Directly underneath it are the structural components such as the roof trusses and joists. The roof deck has a broad, flat surface usually made of plywood. Roof decking can have one or more layers of boards for extra strength.

What Is Its Purpose?

The roof decking has two main roles. First, it acts as the main platform for the roofing system’s underlayment. Aside from the underlayment, the decking also supports the weight of the shingles or metal roofing panels. It also acts as a tertiary barrier in case some water leaks through the underlayment.

Is It Prone to Problems?

A well-maintained roof will rarely, if ever, have problems with the roof decking. However, when decking-related issues do crop up, they must be addressed immediately. Moisture and humidity issues can cause wood rot and compromise the roof deck’s ability to support the upper roof components, causing sagging or even collapses.

Decking Repairs and Replacement

Problems related to the roof’s decking can easily be fixed by a reputable roofing and siding contractor. Also, since the decking doesn’t usually suffer from major issues, roofers can keep the original decking during a roof replacement, only replacing the shingles and underlayment. The only time new decking is needed is when you’re changing the property’s roof to have a completely different profile or slope.
