Gutter

Culprits Behind Gutter Clogs

Your gutters serve one of the most essential roles in ensuring your home is fully functional. They catch rainwater and direct it away from your property. This reduces the risk of serious water damage in and around your home. However, gutters are not invincible, and one of the biggest threats to gutter functionality is clogging. Today, we share some of the significant causes behind gutter clogs.

  1. Bird’s nests. Birds are attracted to gutter systems, where they like to build nests. Squirrels and other rodents may also take advantage of moving in. While it’s challenging to remove wildlife in the habitat they created, you can easily prevent them from making such by installing a mesh cover over your system.
  2. Leaves. This is the most common clogging culprit, especially during the fall. You can protect your gutters by trimming surrounding trees and pruning away the branches near your house.
  3. Sludge. When decaying leaves and animal nests are neglected in your gutters, they can easily break down into slime. This thick grime hinders proper drainage and runoff.
  4. Weeds. Gutters that are full of dirt and other debris can become a prime breeding ground for weeds. If you notice weeds growing in your gutters, call your contractor right away for professional cleaning.
